Attendance
Attendance, tardy and truancy reporting policy
A student who misses any day(s of school (excused or unexcused, not only extends their time at DAEP, but also runs the risk of losing high school credit or being held back in middle school for failure to attend. The State of Texas requires that a student be in attendance 90% of the time a class is offered. If a student misses a portion of the day due to a court appearance or a doctor’s appointment, the student will not be counted absent if the student brings proper documentation and the student is present for a portion of the school day.
When a student is absent from school, a parent or legal guardian should call the DAEP office at 713 251-1755 to report the absence. District attendance is reported from DAEP. Absences accumulated will count in addition to the previous absences from the home school. Upon returning to school, the student is required to bring a note explaining their absence. The note must be signed by the parent, legal guardian, or court. All notes must be submitted within two days of the absence for the absence to be excused. After two days, all absences will be considered unexcused.
Students should arrive to the main campus before 7:55 a.m. If a student is late to school, he/she must check-in and be searched in the main office. Students who are tardy to school lose their points from the classes they did not attend.
If a student needs to leave school early, the parent must submit a note indicating the date, time, and reason for the early release. The parent must sign the student out at the DAEP office.
Students who leave early will not receive points for the classes they do not attend. The only exception is court or doctor’s appointments. Proof of such appointments must be provided the next day to receive placement credit. Truancy will result in disciplinary action. Students who are not in school do not receive placement credit. DAEP will report the student to the truancy officer upon their third unexcused absence.
